The Dear Mother Community Project

Community-Engaged Project / Outreach

Experiences of mothers of colour are vastly underrepresented in the cultural storytelling of what it means to be a mother in Canada…

To add to Waterloo Region’s diverse cultural story, and in the spirit of using art to build community and foster social inclusion, we are engaging a Writing Workshop Facilitator from Firefly Creative Writing to help us carry-out a community art project called the "Dear Mother Community Project".

Facilitated by Firefly, assisted by our 2019-2020 Playwright-in-Residence Intisar Awisse, and coordinated by Green Light Arts, mothers from our community who identify as women of colour will be invited to participate in workshops to share their stories and opinions and unpack experiences of mothering in Canada through the lens of their cultural identity.

Creative writing workshops take place in libraries and community centres in each city of Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge. Participants will be paid an honorarium for their time and to assist with childcare costs.

The goal is to centre the voices of these participants and celebrate their contribution to our community as storytellers. The hope is to increase a sense of well-being and togetherness through creative expression and to bear witness as to how cultural identity shapes experiences.

Content will be audio recorded for podcasts and documented as a collection of stories (online and print) with the option to maintain anonymity. This community project compliments a new play development project from Intisar Awisse called (m)otherhood.
